neurodiversity-affirming NEUROPSYCHOLOGY

Understand how your brain works.

Neudle offers neurodiversity-affirming neuropsychological assessments, designed for situations where a detailed and formal understanding of neuropsychological functioning is needed.

These assessments involve structured testing alongside careful, neurodiversity-affirming interpretation. Rather than relying on narrow or pathologising explanations, results are considered in context, looking at how different neuropsychological functions are working together and how this translates to day-to-day experiences.

The aim is clarity and accuracy, without losing sight of the person behind the data.

ABOUT

A neuropsychological assessment is a detailed and formal evaluation of neuropsychological functioning using specialised, standardised tests. Neuropsychological functions describe the different ways your brain processes information, such as memory, attention, learning, problem-solving, language, processing speed, visuospatial skills, and executive functioning. These functions work together to support how you think, learn, and navigate daily life.

Unlike questionnaire-based assessments that rely primarily on interviews and self-report measures, neuropsychological assessment directly measures how your brain processes information across different domains. This allows for a more detailed and objective understanding of how different systems are functioning and interacting.

The assessment process involves multiple components, including clinical interview, structured neuropsychological testing, observation of how you approach tasks, interpretation of test results in the context of your lived experience, and, where relevant, input from an informant. Findings are carefully integrated with your history, goals, and concerns, and synthesised into a coherent neuropsychological profile rather than isolated scores or labels.

Neuropsychological assessments go beyond diagnosis alone. They are used to understand patterns of strengths and challenges, how these affect everyday functioning, and what types of supports, strategies, or accommodations may be helpful.

Our assessments are recommended for individuals who have questions about their neuropsychological functioning and are seeking greater clarity, understanding, or guidance around next steps or support needs.

Our neurodiversity-affirming approach

At Neudle, neuropsychological assessments are conducted and interpreted through a neurodiversity-affirming lens, while still meeting the standards of evidence-based neuropsychological practice required for high-quality assessment.

We follow standardised, evidence-based approaches to neuropsychological assessment, and interpret results with care, context, and respect for neurodivergent functioning. Rather than relying on simplistic or pathologising explanations, we focus on explaining patterns meaningfully, and clearly articulating what findings do and do not mean in relation to neurodiversity and real-world context.

Our assessments are grounded in a Collaborative Therapeutic Assessment (CTA) model. This means you are an active collaborator in the assessment process, not a passive recipient of results. You are recognised as the expert in your own lived experience, and you work alongside your clinical neuropsychologist to build a shared understanding of your neuropsychological functioning.

Rather than focusing solely on deficits, the CTA approach supports a broader exploration of your strengths, challenges, compensatory strategies, and supports that may be helpful. The assessment process itself is used as a therapeutic tool, creating space for reflection, discussion, learning, and validation. Our intention is for the assessment to be not only informative, but also meaningful and supportive.

Each assessment is tailored to your specific goals and referral questions. Testing, interpretation, and reporting are guided by what you are seeking to understand, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Our work is also informed by a neurodiversity-affirming framework embedded throughout the assessment process. This includes:

  • Prioritising a safe and respectful environment where you can be yourself, without pressure to mask
  • Acknowledging that neuropsychological testing can be anxiety-provoking or stressful, particularly for neurodivergent or neurologically diverse individuals
  • Allowing flexibility and time across the assessment day, and inviting discussion of any accommodations that may support you through the process
  • Interpreting and reporting results in a neuro-affirming manner
  • Actively recognising and celebrating strengths, adaptations, and compensatory strategies alongside areas of difficulty

Our neurodiversity-affirming approach does not change the rigour of assessment, but it does change how the process is experienced and how results are understood and communicated, informed by our own lived experience as well as clinical expertise. We aim to provide a nuanced understanding of how different cognitive systems interact, and how this relates to neurodivergence, development, injury, or illness. The goal is to ensure findings are meaningful, respectful, and useful in real life, rather than reducing a person to scores or labels.

Who are neuropsychological assessments for?

Neuropsychological assessments are recommended where there is a clear and appropriate reason for detailed neuropsychological testing. They are typically used to answer specific clinical or functional questions about how a person’s brain is working, rather than for broad or exploratory assessment alone.

Neuropsychological assessment can help with understanding:

  • Specific neuropsychological functions, such as memory, attention, executive functioning, learning, processing speed, verbal reasoning, or visuospatial reasoning
  • Whether particular cognitive difficulties may be present, such as dyslexia, executive functioning differences, or slowed processing speed
  • Areas of strength, including giftedness
  • A person’s overall neuropsychological profile, including patterns of strengths and challenges and how these interact
  • Changes in cognition in the context of medical conditions, injury, illness, or procedures (for example stroke, brain injury, infection, neurosurgery, multiple sclerosis, depression, or Autistic burnout)
  • Cognitive strengths and challenges associated with lifelong neurodivergence or developmental conditions
  • The impact of other medical conditions or treatments on neuropsychological functioning

Neuropsychological assessments are often used to explore questions such as:

  • How a person’s neuropsychological profile affects learning, attention, memory, executive functioning, or day-to-day functioning
  • How cognitive patterns interact with neurodivergence, development, injury, illness, or neurological conditions
  • Whether cognitive changes are present, and how they are impacting daily life
  • What supports, adjustments, or accommodations may be helpful based on neuropsychological functioning

Our assessments are recommended for individuals who have questions about their neuropsychological functioning and goals such as:

  • Gaining a clearer understanding of their neuropsychological profile
  • Identifying specific areas of difficulty
  • Identifying areas of strength, including compensatory strategies
  • Informing practical supports, adjustments, or next steps

Neuropsychology vs Neurodiversity Assessments

Neudle offers both neurodivergence assessments and neuropsychological assessments. While they can overlap in some areas, what’s involved is very different, and they are used to answer different types of questions.

Neurodivergence assessments:

Our neurodivergence assessments focus on diagnosis and/or understanding of neurodivergence such as Autism and ADHD. They are designed to support self-understanding, identity, access to supports, and practical recommendations for daily life, education, and work.

These assessments primarily draw on clinical interviews, questionnaires, and contextual understanding to explore a person’s experiences, strengths, challenges, and support needs.

Neuropsychological assessments:

Neuropsychological assessments, on the other hand, provide a detailed and formal evaluation of neuropsychological functioning (including cognition) using specialised, standardised tests. Rather than relying primarily on self-report or questionnaires, neuropsychological assessment directly measures how different neuropsychological functions are working and interacting.

Neuropsychological functions include things like memory, attention, problem-solving, language, processing speed, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and movement. These systems work together to support thinking, learning, and everyday functioning. Neuropsychological assessment examines these functions in depth, helping to clarify patterns of strengths, challenges, and interactions across domains.

A neuropsychological assessment typically involves multiple integrated steps, including:

  • Clinical interview and background information
  • Structured neuropsychological testing conducted in session
  • Observation of how tasks are approached and managed
  • Interpretation of test results alongside lived experience and self-report
  • Where relevant, input from an informant (such as a family member or support person)
  • Integration of findings with personal history, goals, and concerns
  • A comprehensive written report addressing specific clinical or functional questions

In practice, neuropsychological assessments:

  • Involve substantially more testing, interpretation, and integration
  • Explore neuropsychological functioning in greater depth and detail
  • Are used selectively, where there is a clear reason for formal cognitive evaluation
  • Produce more extensive reporting and formal documentation

For many people, a neurodivergence assessment is the most appropriate and sufficient option. Neuropsychological assessment is recommended only where additional depth, scope, or formal neuropsychological analysis is genuinely required. We will always guide you toward the assessment pathway that best fits your needs and the questions you are seeking to answer.

TIERS
& FEES

Neudle’s neuropsychological assessments are offered in structured tiers to provide clarity, predictability, and flexibility, while allowing assessments to be tailored to the level of depth and complexity required.

Tier pricing is calculated based on the total clinician time and scope of assessment. This includes in-session testing, scoring, interpretation, report writing, and feedback. This approach is designed to be transparent, while accurately reflecting the amount of clinical work involved in completing a neuropsychological assessment.

Tier 1: Foundational

$2,490

The Foundational tier forms the core of all neuropsychological assessments at Neudle. Higher tiers are built on this foundation.

What this tier includes:
  • Intake and clinical interview
  • Neuropsychological testing, which may include depending on your goals:
    • Assessment of general cognitive ability
    • Verbal comprehension
    • Visuospatial reasoning
    • Processing speed
    • Fluid reasoning
    • Adaptive functioning
    • Screening of memory, attention, and executive function
  • Scoring, interpretation, and clinical formulation
  • Brief informant input, where clinically required
  • A written neuropsychological report
  • One feedback session

Time involved:
  • Around 3 hours of in-session interview and testing time
  • Around 1 hour of in-session feedback
  • An additional 6-8 hours of clinician time outside of sessions for scoring, interpretation, report writing, and feedback preparation

Who this tier is for:

This tier is recommended for people who wish to gain a clearer understanding of their neuropsychological functioning more generally, without a highly specific or complex area of concern. It provides a solid, formal cognitive profile that can stand alone or form the basis for further assessment if needed.

Tier 2: Expanded

$2,990

The Expanded tier builds on the Foundational assessment by adding one additional area of focused neuropsychological assessment.

This tier is suitable where there is a specific area of concern requiring more detailed exploration, such as memory, executive functioning, learning, or attention, alongside a broader understanding of neuropsychological functioning.

Additional domains at this level typically involve more specialised testing and deeper interpretation, and require further integration within the report.

What this tier includes:
  • All components of the Foundational assessment
  • Focused neuropsychological assessment of one additional domain, selected based on your goals and referral questions
  • Expanded scoring, interpretation, and clinical formulation
  • A more detailed neuropsychological report

Time involved:
  • Around 4 hours of in-session interview and testing time
  • Around 1 hour of in-session feedback
  • An additional 7-9 hours of clinician time outside of sessions for scoring, interpretation, report writing, and feedback preparation

Who this tier is for:

This tier is recommended for people who have a specific cognitive concern they would like explored in more depth, such as learning difficulties, memory changes, or executive functioning challenges. It is suited to presentations where there is greater complexity than a general overview, but where concerns remain focused to a single additional neuropsychological domain.

Tier 3: Comprehensive

$3,490

The Comprehensive tier is designed for more complex presentations where assessment across multiple additional neuropsychological domains is clinically indicated.

This tier includes everything in the Foundational assessment, plus in-depth assessment of two additional neuropsychological domains, with higher complexity in interpretation, formulation, and integration.

What this tier includes:
  • All components of the Foundational assessment
  • Neuropsychological testing with in-depth assessment of multiple additional domains, depending on your goals
  • Greater depth of interpretation, integration, and formulation across domains
  • A more extensive and integrated neuropsychological report

Time involved:
  • Around 5 hours of in-session interview and testing time
  • Around 1 hour of in-session feedback
  • An additional 8-10 hours of clinician time outside of sessions for scoring, interpretation, report writing, and feedback preparation

Who this tier is for:

This tier is recommended where multiple neuropsychological functions need to be assessed in depth, over and above the screening conducted in the Foundational assessment. It is most appropriate for presentations that are complex, overlapping, or atypical, or where a broader neuropsychological picture is required to meaningfully answer the referral questions and guide next steps.

Choosing the right tier

When you enquire or book, please let us know what you’re struggling with or what you’ve noticed, and what you’re hoping to understand. We will guide you toward the most appropriate tier based on your questions and goals.

While Tier 1 (Foundational) is the base for all of our neuropsychological assessments, not everyone needs the additional tiers. As core neuropsychological functions are screened as part of the Foundational assessment, Tier 1 is often sufficient. Additional tiers are recommended only where greater depth or formal neuropsychological assessment is genuinely required.

We will work with you to determine which tier best suits your needs prior to the interview and testing day. Our aim is to recommend the assessment pathway that best fits your questions and needs, without unnecessary testing or cost.

Additional time and complexity

Each tier includes a defined scope of clinician time. In some cases, additional time may be clinically required beyond the selected tier, for example where further testing, interpretation, or integration becomes necessary based on findings that emerge during the assessment.

Where this occurs:

  • Any additional time is billed at the standard Clinical Neuropsychologist hourly rate. Please refer to our Fees & Rebates page for more information.
  • Any additional time is discussed with you in advance.
  • Additional work proceeds only with your agreement.

PROCESS

Getting started

Clients may self-refer, be referred by another professional, or already be working with Neudle. An assessment is not offered automatically, instead we first consider whether neuropsychological testing is appropriate for your needs and whether it’s likely to answer the questions being asked. If it isn’t the right fit, we’ll guide you toward a more suitable option.

Neuropsychological assessments are primarily offered for adults and older adolescents. We do not routinely assess children.

Before testing begins, we’ll send you some materials and equipment that will be used as part of the assessment process.

Sessions

The assessment itself is completed via telehealth and typically includes an intake session to clarify referral questions and goals, and a testing session involving structured cognitive tasks. Tasks may involve problem-solving, memory, attention, language, or other thinking skills. There are no medical procedures or invasive elements involved.

Most testing is completed in one day, often over a longer block of time (for example, 3–6 hours) with plenty of breaks as needed, rather than being spread across multiple shorter appointments.

Analysis and reporting

Following testing, all scoring, review, interpretation, formulation, third-party contact (where relevant), and report writing is completed by the neuropsychologist. This stage takes significant time and care, as results are integrated into a meaningful neuropsychological profile rather than treated as isolated scores.

Feedback and report

Once analysis is complete, you’ll have a feedback session to talk through the findings, what they mean in context, and how they relate to your everyday functioning. You’ll also receive a comprehensive written report outlining results, interpretations, and relevant recommendations.

Scope and timing

Neuropsychological assessments are comprehensive by design, but the exact length and scope vary depending on the questions being asked. Some assessments are more focused, others require broader or extended testing. We’ll discuss this with you upfront so expectations are clear.

FAQ

Can this be used for legal or forensic matters?

Neudle provides neuropsychological assessments for clinical purposes only.

We do not conduct assessments for legal, forensic, compensation, insurance, or tribunal matters (including court reports, medico-legal assessments, or formal capacity evaluations).

If you are seeking an assessment for legal proceedings, insurance claims, compensation matters, or tribunal purposes, please let us know prior to booking. In these cases, we may not be the right service and can discuss alternative options or refer you to an appropriate provider.

What if I’ve had testing before?

Neuropsychological tests can be affected by practice effects, which occur when familiarity with test materials leads to improved scores over time. This can reduce the accuracy and clinical usefulness of both current and future assessments.

If you have completed a neuropsychological or cognitive assessment within the past 12 months, this may limit the tests we are able to use or mean that assessment is not recommended at this time. We carefully consider prior testing history when determining whether a neuropsychological assessment is appropriate, as re-administering similar tests too soon, even with a different provider, can compromise results.

Please let us know if you have had any neuropsychological or cognitive testing in the past 1-2 years before proceeding with a booking. It’s also important to be aware that completing a neuropsychological assessment may limit the accuracy of similar testing in the near future. Where relevant, this will be discussed with you as part of the assessment process.

How is this done via telehealth?

Our neuropsychological assessments are conducted via telehealth, using a structured process designed to ensure testing remains valid and clinically robust.

To complete the assessment, you will need a stable internet connection, a quiet and private space, and access to two devices: a computer with a minimum screen size of 9.75 inches, and a smartphone with a camera. These are required to support different components of the testing process.

We will also post you an assessment pack containing any additional materials or equipment needed for testing. If you’re unsure whether your technology, space, or setup meets these requirements, we strongly encourage you to check in with us before booking so we can talk it through with you.

Clarity, with care.
